Worth every dime. September 9, 2010 Susan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a person who's house is filled to the roof with reference books, I told myself I could buy another bookshelf and put it *somewhere*...or buy the Kindle and put all my books in one little device. I chose the Kindle and I'm not disappointed. I debated for a while though because of reading a couple negative reviews. Here's some quickies I read and my response:
Some people complained about the folders option not being suitable enough but I don't know why. You can create collections to organize everything. What more do you need?
Some people complained it was heavy. I sit on the couch with books ten times heavier...this little thing is a relief! I don't think its heavy at all.
Some people complained it didn't do enough...it's a book. If you're looking for a all in one device, this isn't it. If you want something to collect, organize and read your books from, this your device.
I love my Amazon Kindle DX! I plan on buying the little one to use for traveling.
The DX = software issues and serious shortcomings September 8, 2010 OldRick (Pacific Northwest) This DX Graphite has a lovely display, and the browser works better than I expected.
However, the PDF software support is massively flaky, and there are important missing functions:
- I loaded one 7MB PDF into it that required almost two minutes to open each time I tried, and usually froze the machine after displaying the first page. The entire Kindle would lock up and require a hard restart by holding the power button Off for 30 seconds whenever I tried to open it. Customer support is "looking into it," but not very seriously, as they didn't even request a copy of the file to investigate.
A different smaller PDF file simply never appeared in the Home page list of documents, no matter how I tried to load it into the Kindle.
- A couple of features that were available in earlier and later Kindle versions do not exist on the DX: it does not allow adjustment of line spacing, and does not support Left justification. Both of these shortcomings reduce reading speed and readability considerably. It also offers only one typeface, contrary to earlier Kindle publicity.
- The Home page is the most unusable table of contents imaginable.
You can sort the document display by author, title, or tags(categories), but only in low-to-high sequence, and every document you own is always shown in the list. Try to image the nightmare of finding a document by an author whose name begins with Z, but which you cannot remember how to spell, once you have more than a couple of hundred documents. It would take longer to browse to the document than to read it, if you had anything like the advertised 3500 books stored!
Further, it is just a simple text list with a lot of space between the lines, which makes very poor use of screen space - a book-cover icon view would be far more useful.
What bothers me is that Amazon has given no indication of any plans to update the DX v2.5 software with bug fixes or feature upgrades. For that reason I'll probably be returning it, in spite of its excellent 9.7" screen.
Very Happy, would recommend for all September 8, 2010 Wunkmonkman 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Amazon Kindle is more than I could have hoped it to be. The functionality, ease of use, volume of books, and screen quality all surpass what I would have imagined or surmised from reviews. I've played around with a friend of mine's older generation Kindle and this is a far cry from that device. I also own a smaller Sony Reader Pocket, and while that device is VERY compact and portable. It just doesn't offer the wealth of features that the Kindle DX does. I can easily see how the two could be considered, "Apples and Oranges," due to the different MO's if the two devices, but if you take away any one thing let it be this: The Amazon store and the screen darkness/clarity are MUCH better than anything the competitors have to offer. Other additional features that anyone can appreciate are led by Whisper Sync. Having your primary device sync up with your secondary and tertiary devices is just outstanding. The only caveat of this feature is that the wireless does have to be enabled, which will increase your battery drain. That being said, I bought my DX in the beginning of August and after daily extended use, did not have to charge it until about a month later.
I can strongly recommend this product. I think that both versions of the Kindle have much to offer, but if you aren't on a gadget budget, or have some extra cash, and don't mind a device that's about the same size of a marble composition book (w/o a cover), then this device will not disappoint. An additional note for those of you that might be on the fence about an electronic reading device or think you aren't "tech-savvy," the set-up of this device is very simple and it comes with a pretty easy to understand user guide that is stored on the device so you'll always have it for a reference guide. This guide also isn't written as a dryer-than-bones instruction manual, it's truly a reference manual; written as if you were having a conversation with a knowledgeable friend.
Good luck!
It broke three times in the first year. It just doesn't hold up. September 8, 2010 S. Walls (Los Angeles, CA USA) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
While I absolutely love the intent of this product, and the reading experience is much more authentic than reading on my iPad (which I also love), I have had to have my Kindle DX replaced two times already in the first year that I've owned it. The first time the battery wouldn't stay charged, the second time the 3G radio stopped working properly and the battery wouldn't stay charged and now after having this newest replacement Kindle for only a few months, the screen has stopped working. I called Kindle support again and while they have always been very helpful in the past and I've always received the new Kindle the very next day when there has been a problem, today the friendly guy in support tells me that now my Kindle DX is out of the warranty period and it will cost me $190 for a replacement. This after paying the full price only a little more than a year ago and having it replaced twice in that year. I just can't do it, I paid full price the first time, I can't drop another $200 just to use this thing for more than a year, and I'm sure it'll break again soon. It's to bad really, because when it worked I loved it. I guess I'll be reading all my Kindle books on my iPad from now on. Unfortunately I can't recommend this based on cost and unreliability.
Great Product plus Support September 7, 2010 Thomas (Merrimac, Morocco) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The new Kindle screen contrast is fantastic for reading. The whole operation for downloading books is so easy and hassle free it is almost addicting. The customer support is remarkable. I left my kindle in our van over the weekend and when I went to use it the screen had lines ( might have gotten too hot )running through it. I called customer support and they shipped out a new kindle, next day ship at no charge. How cool is that.
