Damaged my bike :( July 26, 2010 NasTraDooMis My bike fell off when at the top of the ceiling of garage causing $70 in damage. Bent handlebars and broken bar end. The hooks on this product are an L shape and have very cheap rubber like end pieces that do not stay on. If the hooks where more of a "fishhook" or U shape this item would work out. I may have to drill a hole on each hook and put a bolt through it to keep bike from slipping off the hooks. Also the pulley system doesn't work that great, theres a bit of binding and the rope slips off the side of the pulleys sometimes. + when hoisting the bike up, the front and rear doesn't go up evenly but at an extreme angle where for example the front of the bike will be pointing down at like a 20 degree angle and sometimes i have to pull on the rope from the rear hooks to even it out - i hope that made sense :>
Great Product July 18, 2010 L. Desroches This is a great product for the price. I took some time to set up the system by making some wood 2X4 mounts for the pulleys as my beams run parallel to the orientation of the bikes. The joist beams are not thick enough to mount this system. The home made mounts were "I" shaped 2X4 mounts and the setup works great! The locking mechanism seems pretty sturdy.....I have not has a bike fall or slide unexpectedly. I would buy more if I had more bikes.
Good deal for the money July 17, 2010 Marc A. Baldwin (Catonsville, MD USA) Short and to the point:
1) Installation was easy
2) The pulley is easy to use
3) It does what it's supposed to for a cheap price
I bought three sets and have three bikes hanging together in my garage (staggered). My only complaint is that the hooks are not really hooks. They are more like "L" brackets and as a result they don't "hook" the bike seat particularly well. I have to be very careful with my trek road bike as I'm lifting it to make sure the brackets don't slip out from underneath the seat. I actually tried to bend them to make them more like a hook but they are too solid (I guess that's a good thing).
My garage ceiling is high enough that I don't bump the bikes at all when they are lifted. If you think they will get bumped occasionally, you'll probably need to rig something to make sure the hooks stay put on the seat.
All in all, I'd say that for the price I paid it was worth it.
Does what it says. July 7, 2010 Dean Nothing fancy here. Mount it and store your bikes. You may have to bend the hooks, depending on the bike seat. Safety lock is nice. Keeps the bike from falling on your head. It may take a few tries to get used to, though. Product does what it advertises.
worth the money July 5, 2010 College Professor One thing that you should know is that it is not really possible to get your bike all the way to the ceiling. I tried placing the clips in different places (i.e. wheels, bar, etc.), but then the balance of the system was lost and it became difficult to raise uniformly. So, be aware if your overhead is tight. You should add about 6-10 inches onto the height of your bike to determine how low it will hang. There were a lot of higher priced alternatives, but this one worked fine. I started with 2, but will be purchasing more in the future. I highly recommend this product. The product worked as advertised. You may connect it in parallel directly to the joist, but will need a 2x4 piece of wood if you desire to connect it perpendicular to the beams. The brake works very well - if you suddenly let go of the rope, it immediately stops. I recommend threading the rope through each stage (there are 4 sections) before mounting to the ceiling.
